The NATO STO Collaboration Support Office, NATO Modeling and Simulation Group and Human Factors and Medicine (HFM) Panel will hold a Research Specialists' Meeting on "HUMAN DIGITAL TWIN IN THE MILITARY: Findings and Perspective". The in-person meeting will be held in Orlando, Florida from 10 - 12 December 2024 (Optional Ice Breaker, 9 December 1800-2000).

The meeting is open to citizens from NATO member countries and NATO partnership format nations: Partnership for Peace (PfP), Mediterranean Dialogue (MD), Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI), Partners across the Globe (GP) as well as the following contact country - Singapore. Please note that this is an in-person only event (hybrid/virtual attendance is not possible).

This registration is for individuals who are attending the HFM-MSG-375 Research Specialists' Meeting.

The registration deadline is 22 November 2024.

Objectives:

The objective of this Specialists’ Meeting is to examine the use of Human Digital Twins (HDTs) in the military. HDTs are digital counterparts of real-life individuals, which capture and simulate the physical, mental and social aspects of a human. They are used in a variety of applications, including simulation and training, robotics, biomedical research, decision support and others. This activity is not intended to create a HDT or collect data useful in a HDT but to understand activities with respect to military relevant application. If successful, the Research Specialist Meeting (RSM) will drive a common understanding of terminology, an inclusive set of use cases, and an understanding of current capabilities to drive a shared vision of HDTs and their applications.

The specialist meeting will be conducted in themed panels to explore topics related to use of HDTs, including but not limited to the following topic areas:

1. Human Digital Twin Use Cases
2. Biomechanical Human Digital Twins
3. Real-time Physiological Status Modeling
4. Cognitive Human Digital Twins
5. Holistic Systems
6. Medical Human Digital Twins

The RSM seeks to develop and define a broad set of military relevant use cases as indicated in the topic areas. While the committee is interested broadly in these topics, the following list of detailed topics with accompanying descriptions are provided to further illustrate some known areas of specific interest.

The RSM will facilitate the information exchange on Human Digital Twins for military applications and related modelling and data-requirement through presentations on most of the above topics from research and innovation points of view. The outcome of this RSM should improve current studies on the subject, suggest areas for further NATO research activities and re-enforce the links with military bodies in NATO.

The main exploitation envisioned could support digital twin technology to help military personnel, operations, and equipment to be better managed, monitored, and improved. This could involve technology to create a digital replica of a soldier to accurately simulate the physical and mental effects of battle, or a digital twin of human that can be integrated with the digital twin of a weapon system to predict performance and maintenance needs, digital twins of training and operational systems to support tailored training. Additionally, HDTs could enable advances in tactics and strategy, or to improve decision-making in the field.

Prominent leaders, contributors and representatives from the military, government, academia, and industry are expected to attend the meeting.

The objective of this Course is to provide state of the art knowledge and practices in aerospace medicine, share national practices and evaluate new and emerging technologies on the subject of Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance in its broadest context to NATO Flight Surgeons, by a group of expert lecturers from NATO nations.

The theme for the 2025 Technical Course is “Fighting The Next Fight". The course will cover the current and future challenges in Aerospace Medicine in deployed area and multinational environments, focusing on Operational Aviation Medicine. Risks and advantages of various approaches will be compared with the aim of recommending best practices and thus improving interoperability.

Theme:

 The scope of the workshop is broad, covering the use of modelling and simulation to support qualification and certification of land-, air- and sea-based systems. It encompasses all engineering disciplines across the full system lifecycle. The programme committee particularly seeks contributions addressing the following four key thematic areas:

• The development and use of modelling and simulation capabilities in the context of system qualification and certification.
• Model assurance. Tools, methods and processes for establishing stakeholder confidence and credibility in model predictions and the use of model predictions for high-consequence decision making.
• Simulation management, governance and regulation.
• Education and Training.

The main objectives of the Research Workshop are:

• To provide an opportunity to gather together experts, specialists and interested stakeholders with an interest in system qualification and certification by analysis;
• To provide a forum to share existing knowledge and practice;
• To identify and prioritize remaining challenges that require further research and development.
